March Showers Bring April Flowers
March showers bring April flowers-at least daffodils. With the spring equinox behind us we’ve started the official start of spring and Aries season(the only sign I know when it begins because it’s my birth sign and starts with the first day of spring). Just the other day I saw someone talking about how hard it is for them to transition from the slow pace of winter into the busy season of spring. Personally I feel the opposite. Spring Equinox always brings me BSE, big spring energy. Spring is truly my favorite season, could be because I'm a spring baby and clearly this is my time of year to thrive.
Our first blooms on the farm just in time for the spring equinox
I love spring and not just the flashy spring most people in the northeast adore. By flashy spring I mean the 60-70 degree weather that invokes a sense of summer. The bright pops of candy colored tulips looking like perfect little lollipops on neon green stems. The sickeningly sweet scent of the flowers like hychinths. Don’t get me wrong I love those things just as much as the next person but I also love the subtler changes and less glamorous signs of spring. Misty cool rain that leaves the farm in enchanting fogs that create a sense of magic. The smell of wet muddy earth as the ground thaws and awakens for the year. Sweet delicate scent of trees blooming that you can only catch for a second. The first true pops of color like the weeping willows turning yellow, the little red flowers of the maple buds and silver of our wild pussy willows sparkling in the woods and along the roadside scrub brush. All this to say as I’m happy to wander the farm in misty 37 degrees rain admiring spring as I am flocking in 60 degrees picking daffodils with the morning sun.

In other updates I’ve been busy starting more and more seedlings. We planted our first crop into the field- sweet peas, an enchanting and sickeningly sweet scented flower. Working on important infrastructure projects like the building of our walk-in cooler and irrigation systems to reach our perennial field. It’s always amazing how slow spring begins- like we’re looking for any little project to get started at the end of winter and then all the sudden there are more projects than time.
